About Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a small country nestled in the Northern tropics, between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and North and South America.  It covers just 0.03% of the worlds land surface yet it contains some 6% of the worlds biodiversity. In comparison, Costa Rica has more plants and animals than 90% of the entire USA!

Packing a lot of punch, with lush rainforests, waterfalls, volcanoes, and black and white-sand beaches. Driving coast to coast takes only three hours by car, so it’s possible to surf or unwind on the black sand beaches of the Pacific and then snorkel through the calm Caribbean waters on one vacation. Surfing, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, diving, snorkeling and exploring the diverse and colorful ecosystems are also popular excursions. The National Parks and biological reserves cover almost 1/3 of the national territory. All protected areas where the wild animals in Costa Rica, monkeys, parrots, sloths, raccoons, jaguars etc. can live in peace without fear of future development.

Typical dishes:  Casado: A large plate that contains: red meat, chicken or fish, rice, beans, sweet plantains, cabbage and tomato salad, tortillas and picadillo. Gallo Pinto: a mixture of white rice and whole black beans with special Tico spices, cilantro and onion. It is usually served with sour cream on the side.
Typical phrases: “Pura vida”! (Great, full of life, excellent) - “How are you”? - “Pura vida”!
Official Language: The official language is Spanish. However English is widely spoken in the country.
